Week 4: Tales Designed to Carry an Impact Response

I really enjoy reading comics that have different stories in them because there’s each story has its own thing that makes its special and I think that’s really cool. Something we discussed in class is how different these stories were compared to the other comics we read. This particular comic book wasn’t intended for children at all. There were stories about war and someone falling off of a building which completely took me by surprise considering I had just read a comic about The Flash and Superman.

There was a Fall in Winter which starting with this man on a ledge of a building and there were people below him scared for him and the fire department came to catch him when he fell. But this guy fell and it ended up going into a flashback as he was falling. Turns out this guy lost his job and was fixing to go on the bus when this lady dropped her purse and he picked it up, but she accused him of being a purse snatcher. He ended up running away from the cop who she called and winded up on the edge of this building. While he was trying to get off he slipped and fell, which he was then caught in the end and got his job back because his boss felt bad for him.

Anyways, I think that was a story that really stood out to me because it was talking about this guy falling off a building. That’s not really something you want to show children which I can imagine made parents pretty upset when these types of comics came out. Something noticed was that the covers were similar to other comics that were kid friendly. So I could just imagine some kid buying this comic and reading about guys shooting each other or the story of the man falling of the building. It’s pretty interesting the change of style of comics and the demographic they were intended for.
