Week 14: The Sinking Ship Response

Wow, this comic was so interesting in so many different ways and it's probably one of my favorite comic I've read this entire semester. The art style, the way the comic is structures, the way the writer created the comic to be read is all great. It kind of reminds me of the way a movie would be shot, the way the "scenes" are in this comic. The depth of field, different angles, etc. I think this comic could be recreated into a movie or something. This weeks topic of the Future of Comic is something I'm really interested in after taking this course. There's a lot that can be done with Comics now than when they first started them. The Sinking Ship is a great representation of that exact thought. The different opportunities that someone can have when you create a digital comic book are pretty interesting. The author was able to create this comic around technology and it opened a lot of different doors for what the author could do with the comic itself. For examp

Week 13: Batman The Killing Joke Question Response

1: What is your reaction to the text you just read? I thought this comic was amazing and I really enjoyed reading it. The artwork is something I thought of first, it's so beautiful. Having never heard or read The Killing Joke, but really liking Batman & The Joker I was really interested in the storyline. I feel like all we see with the two is just them fighting and trying to kill each other. But to see each character have their own struggles with identity or how they feel about certain things really humanizes them. It's almost like you push to the side that they're actually a superhero & villain. 2: What connection did you make with the story? Discuss the elements of the story with which you were able to connect. Since I really enjoy learning about The Joker and who he is as a character I think I connected with the flashbacks that were in the comic. Not in the fact that I related and connected to what he was going through. But knowing that The Joker is portra

Week 13: Authority Response

For the give links for Authority, I picked the August one to read. Just because my birthday is in August and I didn't want to read just the first one given. Anyways, this comic was reminded me exactly what I'd expect a superhero comic book to look like. In both the art style and storylines, they both represent the traditional comic book style. Not saying that it's a bad thing because it's all about how it's portrayed and written for its audience. I really enjoyed reading this comic because it wasn't about a very known superhero, at least a known superhero for me and what I've been introduced to.  Since I read the comic series in the middle I didn't expect to actually know the hero and how they came to be. I just already knew there were a superhero and supervillains in this comic so I didn't really need to know much more. I think the storyline of this specific comic was very interesting and although I knew the basics of it I was still intrigued

Week 12: My Friend Irma Response

If I'm being completely honest, I really just clicked on this comic because "Stan Lee" was in the title on the Resource Page. However, after reading the first 2 pages I was so interested in the story to where I just continue reading all of them until I was finished. Something I noticed right off the bat was that the art style of these comics reminded me of the Archie Comics. I'm not sure if the same artist created the art style or if whoever created it found inspiration from the Archie Comics. Anyways, after reading the first story I figured out that "My Friend Irma" isn't a comic that children should read. Not so much because there's nudity or profanity in it and it's not suitable for them. But because the humor seems to be a little bit more young adult/adult humor and jokes that children wouldn't understand. Not saying that's a bad thing, but it's just something I noticed while reading. Another thing I really enjoyed about the

Week 11: In Class Reading Responses

Alice in Sunderland - Imagery - Weird (similar to Alice in Wonderland) - Thrown into the story Optic Nerve - Simple language - What you'd expect from a typical comic (language, art style & layout) - The story is a real-world story Pride of Baghdad - Similar style to pop art comics (color, conversation bubbles) - The story reminds me of a version of the Lion King or Jungle Book (not made by Disney) - A real story within a story Death: The Time of Your Life - Very descriptive - Visually interesting The Fountain - The art style is beautiful - Simple text - The art mostly does the talking

Week 11: Alice in Sunderland Response

I definitely had my expectations when reading this comic and there were some things that surprised me as well. I've never read other adaptations of Alice in Wonderland before this one and I really enjoyed it though. Although the story was very good, I think the thing I enjoyed a lot more was the art style. For something similar to Alice in Wonderland, I really wanted color and these weird drawings included. Which is exactly what was apart of this comic. The use of simple black and white line drawings and including these elaborate colors drawings with them. It really gives you a different feel when reading the story and it really makes your imagination expand. Adding to that I think the fact that they didn't just make the entire comic color was a great inclusion with what you get out of the comic. The type of line work that is used includes similar chaos to the comic book because it's so detailed, but there's no color to it. I could imagine having this comic in my ac

Week 10: Buddha Vol.1 Response

I'm always up to reading things that are about different religions, it's all interesting. For this story, the title caught my attention and I'm really glad that it didn't lie to me. I really did expect a religious comic or at least just some type of religion in it. Something I thought was interesting about the comics art style was that it reminded of an old comic my great-grandmother used to show me, it was about the story of Jesus. Especially when the character is in the village talking to people on the street. It was a simple comic, but still, go the point across. However, the comic I read when I was younger didn't have as much text as this one did. Which I mean isn't bad and I didn't mind all the reading.
