Week 5: Contract with God Response
The Will Eisner’s comics that we read and the Donald Duck
shorts that we saw were all great and I really enjoyed learning more about him
as an artist. There’s a lot of different comics that I’ve seen of his, but I
never bothered to look more into him as a person. Another reason I enjoyed learning
about Eisner was because I remember my grandfather having all kinds of Eisner
comics. Particularly the Spirits comics, he loved those especially and I never
asked him about them.
For this week about Eisner I read A Contract with God
because I have never heard of it before and I thought the title was
interesting. Right off the bat I thought the art work was wonderful and the
style that Eisner chose to go with for this comic was fitting. The font that
was used to make it seem like it was a part of an old bible or testament was
really interesting. Eisner’s style is something I really enjoy about his comics
and it’s why I really enjoyed reading this comic as well. The way that Eisner
meshes his drawings with the text, instead of it just being text on one side
and the pictures or just the text on top of the picture. For example, when he
draws the rain, he makes it stagger on the page and it really set the mood or
he even put the text over the rain. The way he uses his text is something I
enjoyed too because I don’t necessarily feel like I reading a comic, but I feel
like I’m just a part of the story. It all makes me just want to keep scrolling
and see where I’m going to next.
