Week 6: Gay Comix Response
Reading and learning about Underground Comics was very interesting and it’s one of my favorite topics we’ve talked about. I think because it’s so controversial and there’s a lot of pushing boundaries that I love about them.
The Comic that I read was Gay Comix no.1 -3 and it was great, I loved it all. I was at first taken back by it and a little shocked of what was in it considering what we’ve been reading thus far. There’s a lot of sex and nudity in this comic and it’s something that I wasn’t used to seeing in a comic book, but I think it’s great that there’s comics like this. The stories that were in it were all about this person finding their sexuality and going back and forth on if what they’re feeling is real.
The certain comic I read was made in the 1980s and around that time being gay and lesbians were perceived as “wrong” and a lot of people who were gay didn’t want to come out. And that’s what a lot of these stories show, the main character is going back and forth on their feelings. For example, the first story is about this woman who hasn’t found someone to love, but she notices that she finds herself interested in women rather than men. She goes back and forth on if she likes one or the other, she starts dating this woman and goes back on it because she’s scared of getting in trouble. So she marries this man and they end up getting a divorce. She ends up marrying this woman, but before she meets her she goes back and forth on her sexuality.
I really loved reading these Underground Comics and it’s a kind of comic that I think is really interesting. It’s really different from traditional comics like Mickey Mouse, Donald Duck, Charlie Brown etc. I love controversy and it’s something I think more people need to make because our world has become so sheltered. We think that just because we don’t acknowledge it doesn’t mean it’s not there.
